CNC Lathe – Mass Production Turning
Since the introduction of computerization, lathes have advanced enormously over the past years. 'Computer Numerically Controlled' (CNC) lathes and milling machines have revolutionized the mass production of specialized parts.
In this excellent video from Glacern Machine Tools, you will see the automated turning of an aerospace part from start to finish. The raw material is 1" diameter alloy steel. The machine being featured here is a Mori Seiki NL2500SY-700 CNC Turning Center. This model utilizes a Y-axis and C-axis on both spindles, live tooling, and also a subspindle.

Wow! That is a beautiful video. “Poetry in steel.” I found it quite hypnotic watching the machined part reveal itself – like a sculpture from a rock. Excellent.
That is so cool. I could watch that machine run all day long.
